Product Introspection: Veggie Suede

Veggie Suede

Veggie leather is a material that we've been using for many seasons.
Originally, when I was looking for a leather with rough, masculine qualities, I was immediately attracted to vegetable-tanned leather, but finding a suede that moved me in the same way proved to be much more difficult.
I sought a suede that embodied the true essence of leather, and it was at a tannery in Sweden that my search finally ended. It was there that I found an old, small-batch tannery that produces 100% vegetable-tanned suede.
It's not like the suede we've used up until now was bad, but after a lot of wear the suede becomes too soft. These veggie suede shoes, however, are very tough and keep their shape well. You can enjoy the aging process, because the more you wear them the more unique they become. I'm very satisfied with how they turned out.
Tanning

An animal hide left untreated will invariably begin to rot. Since long ago, humans have searched for ways to process hides so that they could be used in various ways for daily life. These processes ranged from softening the hides by sun-drying and beating, smoking the hides by burning straw or brush, and coating the hides with plant or animal oils.
In exploring different ways to prevent the decay of animal hides, a method that utilized the tannins from tree bark and nuts to process hides was born. Hides themselves are made up of collagen fibers (proteins), but the original skins also contain other living organisms. Eliminating these organisms and leaving only the collagen fiber structure results in leather. The use of tree tannins to process hides in this manner is called tanning.
Using natural tannins to tan leather - vegetable - tanning - requires more than 30 steps in its process to complete. It takes much time and energy, but the results speak for themselves. Vegetable-tanned leather is known for its breathability and glossiness, and boasts a natural texture with superb aging properties. Well after the advent of vegetable-tanning, a new, synthetic tanning process called chrome-tanning was developed. This tanning process utilizes chromic acid to tan hides more efficiently by combining the collagen fibers with chromic acid.
Chrome-tanning is a synthetic tanning process that uses metallic substances such as chromium sulfate, sodium dichromate, and chromate to tan hides. It is known for imparting a certain luster to leather, for giving leather a soft hand feel, and for having high resistance to water and heat. Compared to vegetable-tanning, chrome-tanning allows for the efficient tanning of a large amount of hides in a short amount of time, making this the primary reason it is the tanning process of choice for the majority of product manufacturers today.
