There is a beauty that can only be attained by using natural raw materials.
There are only five indigo masters in Tokushima today that produce sukumo in extremely limitied aounts each year. Sukumo that is the raw material for indigo is used in a solution without any chemical agents to make the indigo dye. It is completely different from a synthetic indigo's pigment, which uses chemical agents for the dye.
This method of indigo dyeing was prevalent during the Edo-period, however due to its laborious process and high cost it is much rarer today.
The artisan spoke while showing his hands, which were stained in indigo, "We only use raw material found in nature. That is why we can work with our bare hands. There is a beauty and fineness only found in natural indigo that cannot be produced with a chemical dye."
