저는 이상한 사람이 아닙니다

잡지 <소설신초(新潮)>의 문담좌담회 <이야기의 샘>에서 제가 이상한 사람이 되어버린 것 같습니다. 왠지 괴짜로 여겨지는 것 같고, 소설도 그저 별나고 시기할 정도로만 거론되어서 저도 모르게 우울해졌지요. 세상 사람들이 이상한 사람이라든가 괴짜라고 부르는 인간은 의외로 마음이 약하고 배짱이 없기에 자신을 지키기 위해 그렇게 위장하는 경우가 많다고 생각합니다. 결국 생활에 자신이 없어서 그렇게 표출하는 게 아닐까요?

저는 스스로를 이상한 사람이라고도 별난 남자라고도 생각한 적이 없습니다. 지극히 평범하고 고리타분한, 도덕에도 굉장히 집착하는 기질의 사내지요. 그런데도 완전히 도덕을 무시하는 사람처럼 여기는 이들이 많은 듯한데 사실은 정반대입니다.

하지만 앞서도 말씀드렸듯이 나약한 성격이기에 스스로도 그 나약함만은 인정해야 한다고 생각합니다. 또한 타인과 논쟁을 못하는 것도 나약함 때문이기도 하지만, 제 자신의 기독교적인 요소도 다소 포함되어 있는 것 같습니다.

기독교적인 정신을 말씀드리면, 저는 말 그대로 다 쓰러져가는 집에 삽니다. 물론 남들처럼 평범한 집에서 살고 싶지요. 애들이 딱하다고 느낄 때도 있지만 도저히 좋은 집에서 살 수는 없습니다. 그것은 프롤레타리아적인 의식이나 이념에 의한 것이 아닙니다. 그저 네 이웃을 내 몸같이 사랑하라는 예수님의 말씀을 이상하게 곧이곧대로 믿어버린 탓인 것 같습니다. 하지만 요즘 들어 이 가르침을 도저히 지켜낼 수 없다는 생각을 골똘히 하게 되었지요. 인간은 모두 평등하다는 이런 사상은 사람을 자살로 몰아세우는 건 아닐까요?

'네 이웃을 내 몸같이 사랑하라는 예수님의 가르침을 틀림없이 잘못 해석하지 않았을까, 그 속에는 좀 더 다른 의미가 있지 않을까?'

이런 생각을 했을 때 '내 몸같이 사랑하라'는 표현이 새롭게 다가왔습니다. 결국 자기 자신도 사랑해야 한다, 자신을 싫어하거나 혹은 학대하면서 다른 사람을 사랑한다면 자살할 수밖에 없다는 사실을 어렴풋이 깨닫게 되었지요. 하지만 이것은 단지 핑계일 뿐입니다. 세상 사람들에 대한 제 감정은 항상 수줍음으로 가득 차 있어서 키를 두 치 정도 낮춰서 걸어야 한다는 느낌으로 살아왔습니다. 여기에도 제 문학의 근거가 존재하는 것 같습니다.

또 한 가지 말씀드리면, 역시 사회주의는 올바른 사상이라는 실감을 가지고 있습니다. 이제야 겨우 사회주의 세상이 된 것 같은 느낌이 듭니다. 가타야마 데쓰(片山哲) 총리 같은 사람이 일본의 대표가 된 것은 기쁘지만, 저는 예전처럼, 아니 어쩌면 그 이상으로 비참한 생활을 해야 합니다. 요즘에는 이런 자신의 불행을 떠올려 보면, 평생 행복이란 없을 거라는 생각이 감상이 아닌 명료한 납득의 형태로 느껴집니다.

이런저런 생각을 하다 보면 결국에는 술을 마시게 되지요. 술로 인해 문학관이나 작품이 좌우되지는 않지만, 술은 제 생활은 너무나도 뒤흔들고 있습니다. 앞서도 말씀드렸듯이 사람들과 대면을 해도 이야기를 제대로 하지 못해서 나중에서야 이렇게 말할 걸, 저렇게 말할 걸 하며 항상 아쉬워합니다. 언제나 사람들과 만날 때면 어질어질 현기증이 나서 뭔가 떠들고 있어야 하는 성격이기에 저도 모르게 술을 마시게 됩니다. 그래서 건강도 해치고 집안 경제도 여러 번 파탄이 나서 언제나 가난함에서 벗어날 수 없었지요. 잠자리에서 여러 가지 개선책을 이래저래 궁리해본 적도 있지만, 아무래도 죽어야만 해결될 지경에까지 이른 것 같습니다.

벌써 서른아홉 살이 됩니다. 앞으로 세상을 어떻게 살아갈까 생각해 보면 그저 막막하기만 할 뿐, 아무런 자신이 없습니다. 결국 이런 겁쟁이가 처자식을 부양한다니 오히려 비참하다고 표현해야 할 것 같습니다.

Mocassin

An encounter with someone or something that moves the heart; I want to design products that evoke an emotional connection.

One of my own earliest experiences of this kind was discovered during my late teens, within the traditional Native American moccasin.

For thousands of years, Native Americans have lived in vast territories across the continent, ranging from forest to desert regions. Long before European settlement, mankind's feet on American soil was primarily protected by moccasins; shoes in their most primitive form. Utilizing functionality from natural materials, original moccasins are cut from a single piece of leather wrapping the foot from toe to heel.

Worn in a variety of climates and environments; from rugged wilderness terrains to grasslands, there may have been slight differences in the leather used, or unique decorations and designs adorning beads and laces depending on the tribe and era. However, the basic construction has remained relatively unchanged.

We wanted to express this beautiful and functional footwear into a product suitable for urban environments; in early visvim collections, we introduced the 'FBT' which combined a redesigned upper with the original Native American feeling with modern sneaker outsole technology.

Our prototype developed intent to maximize comfort and breathability consisted of a single piece of vegetable astringent-tanned elk leather with no lining and no glue, and a shock-absorbing EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer) midsole stitched together.

After trial wearing them for a few months, the leather upper of our moccasin came to develop a well-aged patina, which our team felt enthusiastic to offer to our customers.

In order to achieve the unique slope of the soles that stretches all the way to the toes, we used wooden lasts sewn to a thin rubber vibram sole to give birth to our BEARFOOT series.

Original moccasins worn by Native Americans, were made of deer hide tanned white or beige, sewn together to leather soles, which were replaced once damaged to ensure a long life of continued use.

Within our collections up until that point, the FBT silhouette featured a prominently sneaker style and design. We wanted to redesign our version of a moccasin with a slightly more primitive feel and aesthetic, slightly raising the rubber to create cupsole stitched in place to the upper.

Of course, we continue to incorporate great breathability by the use of natural materials such as cork and veggie tanned leather we've developed over recent years, placing importance on comfort when worn over time. I've enjoyed working on and designing these, as one of my favorite pairs of moccasins so far by visvim

Product Introspection: Artworks (SS21)

I often draw with a pencil on Japanese handmade washi paper. Characterized by its irregular surface, the pleasure of drawing on washi lies in the fact that you cannot draw exact straight lines because the lead of the pencil gets caught in the rough fibers, adding unpredictability to the results.

This concept is essential in many ways to how we develop and manufacture our products.

Born during the Meiji era, a dyeing technique, Chusen was invented as an industrialized method to traditional stencil dyeing which had existed for several hundred years.

Dye is poured onto a sheet of fabric, penetrating the top and bottom layers; patterns created by applying resin to prevent or block specific parts from being dyed. As a result, the top and bottom of the fabric react to the dye differently, and depending on the yarn structure of the fabric, the pigment may bleed at the edges of the patterns creating an unpredictable blurring.

This irregular blurring can be seen also in the work of Ise-Katagami, a traditional method of hand-cutting stencil patterns used for stencil dyeing. The artisan carefully carves out designs and images from paper made of handmade Japanese paper treated persimmon tannin. Both the original base-drawing and the hand cutting process ensure a human touch aspect is felt and seen within the final product. I find this unique personality cannot be found in silkscreen, or machine made prints.

All these hints and traces of handiwork created by dedicated craftspeople, provide the charming elements expressed in our products. I am in the continuous search of discovering the best combinations of design, fabric and technique.

This particular traditional method of hand-printing utilizes printing plates; overlapping and slight deviations created by using separate plates for each color, expressing a texture and depth of manual work.

Short sleeve shirt, printed after the original dice pattern drawn in watercolor. the stain, color unevenness, and soft lines of the original paint are reproduced on the fabric.

Printed by chusen method, the original 'LITTLE CLOUD' image created by a hand-engraving. The dye is poured over the top of the laminated fabric which has the image pattern resin glued on the surface, and then flushed from the bottom uning a compressor.

The words 'THIS IS THE LIFE' are reproduced by hand-dyeing from the original hand-drawn and hand-cut stencil. The stenciled letters each have a different balance and thickness, giving them a warmth not found in uniformly flat font produced by digital software.
